It started with a Thingiverse page. The NanoLongRange Evo is a 3D printed ultralight quad that cruises on 18650 laptop cells for absurd flight times, and I decided I wanted one. I knew nothing about FPV. The plan was: print the frame, buy the parts, fly.

Three days of research later I had a complete bill of materials for a $1,414 digital HD setup, live-verified down to individual AliExpress seller ratings. Then I cancelled most of it. This post is the story of both halves, because the reasoning on the way down turned out to be worth more than the shopping list on the way up.

Where the money actually goes

An FPV quad runs two separate radio links, and understanding that split reorganised everything for me. Control goes from you to the drone, and one open standard (ExpressLRS) has largely won, so a single $130 radio binds to every drone you will ever own. Video goes from the drone to you, and that side is a mess of four incompatible ecosystems: analog, DJI, Walksnail, and HDZero. Goggles and the drone's video transmitter have to match brands. Whatever you pick, you are married to.

The second thing that reorganised my thinking: goggles and the radio never crash. They sit on your face and in your hands while the drone eats a tree. Drones are consumables, goggles are infrastructure. Every experienced pilot's advice boils down to spending on the durable half and treating the flying half as disposable.

Then the maths makes the same point louder. In my digital build, the Walksnail Goggles X alone was $769 of the $1,414 total, about 54 percent. Radio, drone, batteries and chargers together cost less than the goggles. There is also a triangle I kept bumping into: slim, digital, cheap. Pick two. A slim digital goggle is $769. A slim analog goggle somehow costs more. A cheap digital goggle is a bulky box. Nobody makes a cheap slim anything.

DJI deserves a paragraph, because on image quality it wins and I still walked away. DJI goggles display DJI video, full stop. No analog input, no HDZero, ever. The Goggles X displays its native Walksnail feed plus analog through a $22 clip-on bay and HDZero over HDMI. There was also a quieter reason: DJI's O4 video system transmits on 2.4GHz, the same band my ELRS control link lives on, a documented source of interference. Walksnail video sits on 5.8GHz and stays out of the radio's way.

Verifying the build with a stealth browser

Australia was in a full Walksnail stock drought when I speced this. Every local boutique showed the same thing: one or two goggles left, drones sold out, restock unknown. The drone had to come from AliExpress, which raises the usual questions about clones and bait listings.

This is where the day job leaked into the hobby. AliExpress hard-walls automated search, but direct item pages load fine, so I pointed the browser tooling I build for work at the exact listings and pulled the live state: seller at 98.1 percent positive with 2,000+ sold, the default variant confirmed as the correct UART ELRS V3 receiver rather than the older SPI one, $392.83 landed with 32 units in stock. The variant trap is real, by the way. The headline price on a listing is often a stripped configuration, a bare video transmitter with no camera, and the real price appears only after you click the actual variant.

Two findings from this phase were worth the whole exercise:

  • Lithium batteries will not ship internationally by air. Whatever you import, the batteries come from a local shop. Plan two orders from the start.
  • The RadioMaster Pocket charges its two 18650 cells internally over USB-C, and its balance circuit has a documented defect. It can push one cell past 4.2V (owners have measured 4.35V), which is venting and fire territory. Charge the cells in an external slot charger, always. This one is a safety issue, not a preference.

The sim humbled me

While the spreadsheet grew, I plugged the radio into the PC. The Pocket enumerates as a plain USB game controller with no drivers, so the simulator costs nothing and works on day one.

I was bad, which I expected. What I did not expect was the quad itself feeling wrong: capped, sluggish, refusing to flip, nothing like the flying I had been watching. I spent a whole session blaming rate settings. The actual cause was the number keys. VelociDrone switches flight modes on keys 1 through 4, and I had been flying in Angle mode the entire time, a self-levelling trainer mode that limits tilt and will not let the quad roll. Key 3 is Rate mode, which is how FPV is actually flown. One keypress and the sim stopped feeling like a toy.

That mistake reframed the purchase. The skill I lacked was not going to come from a $769 goggle. It comes from hours in exactly this sim, which I already owned, for free.

The honest maths, and the pivot

Earlier in the research I had claimed the analog path was a third of the price of digital. When I checked that claim against real Australian prices, it did not survive. The honest number is about half: roughly $663 against $1,414 at local retail. More interesting was where the difference lives. About 70 percent of the entire saving is one line item, the goggle, $769 versus $240. Analog barely saves money on the drone itself. The goggle carries the whole gap.

Sit those facts next to each other and the conclusion writes itself. I cannot hover yet. The expensive items are the ones that make video prettier, and pretty video does nothing for a pilot who is still learning orientation in a free simulator. Spending $1,160 on HD before being able to fly is backwards.

So the plan inverted. The learner kit: an Eachine EV800D analog box goggle around $230, a BetaFPV Meteor75 Pro analog whoop around $185, batteries and a charger around $75. Call it $490 with the radio already owned. A cheap ducted whoop is also the thing you can hand to a friend without wincing, and the EV800D's screen detaches into a standalone field monitor, so it stays useful even after better goggles arrive. The full digital build still exists, fully speced with verified links, as Phase 2. It became the reward for learning to fly instead of the entry fee.

The uncomfortable footnote: when I ran the goggle decision through a multi-agent research sweep early on, its conclusion was to learn on cheap analog first and treat digital as the reward. I had the right answer on day one. It took me three more days of enthusiasm to accept it.

The workspace this came from

This post is a translation of a folder. While all of the above was happening, the research accumulated in ~/projects/fpv as plain markdown: a BOM with live-verified links, a comparison table, a gotchas file, a knowledge dump, a session log. That folder pattern (I call them workspaces, one per topic, maintained during working sessions with a coding agent) has quietly become how every project of mine stores its own memory.

The projects folder has a lot of these. This was the first one worth publishing. More to come.
